Roles of Women in Water, Africa 2023

COACh Workshop: 18-19 August 2023
World Water Week Conference: 20-24 August 2023

The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for a small group of women scientists from several different countries in Africa to share their research ideas and to develop collaborative projects on the topic of the Roles of women in water issues, Leadership and Mentorship. Women will be selected and invited because of their scientific expertise on water related issues on the African continent and their interest in collaborations. The workshop is being sponsored by the Elsevier Foundation. It is being organized by COACh (http://coach.uoregon.edu), a grass-roots organization in the US that is working to increase the success of women scientists in research areas of global need. The goals of this workshop are to:

  • to foster a network of women researchers in Africa who have common interests in increasing international research and collaborative activities between women scientists in African countries.
  • to use this network and the expertise of its participants to develop innovative and cross- disciplinary strategies for advancing the research and educational activities of women researchers and their students
  • to develop skills in Leadership, Mentoring, Negotiation and Networking.

Why is the focus on women? The idea for this workshop was motivated by the success of the US-based COACh program, (run through the University of Oregon).  COACh provides avenues for networking and mentoring of scientists and engineers at all levels to assist them in their research, teaching and career advancement and works closely with many institutions to create equal opportunities for all potential contributors to the scientific and technical workforce. The COACh international program is creating opportunities for women scientists and engineers to build international networks of research and capacity building in areas of global need.

*Travel and meeting expenses will be covered by COACh through support from Elsevier Foundation.  Our workshop is being presented in connection with the World Water Week Conference, Stockholm, Sweden, where we will be hosting a “Talk Show” at the WWW Conference on Tuesday 22 Aug 2023, your WWW Conference Registration will be paid.  If you are planning to stay for the remainder of the conference, you will be responsible for your own expenses for remaining days.
